People make a lot of promises to themselves such as “if only I have this latest gadget or if only I have this kind of job then I will be contented in life.” Most of these promises are never kept because people have not realized the secret to being content in life. Contentment is almost always identified with maintaining a certain social status attained by receiving things and not by giving them away. Paul will show in Philippians 4:10-23 that there is more to contentment found in giving than in receiving.
