In Chapter 1 Paul revealed God’s eternal plan for believers whom He chose and predestined to be part of God’s family. He prayed for God’s Spirit to grant them insights and revelation to know Him deeper. In Chapters 2 to 3, Paul detailed God’s work to make this eternal plan a reality in the present: first, sinners are saved by grace to do good works (2:1-10); second, believers are united into one body (2:11-22); and third, the mystery of Christ is revealed (3:1-13). In this sermon we will learn who are in need of God’s grace, what God has done, and what God plans for believers.
I. The Old Condition: Spiritually Dead. (vv. 1-3)
A. Conformed to the standard of the world. (v. 2a)
B. Convinced by the schemes of Satan. (v. 2b)
C. Controlled by the desires of the flesh. (v. 3a)
II. The New Creation: Spiritually Alive. (2:4-10)
A. By God’s mercy, believers are made alive, raised up, and seated with Christ. (v. 4-7)
B. By God’s grace, believers receive the gift of salvation through faith. (v. 8-9)
C. By God’s design, believers are God’s work of art created to do works of God. (v. 10)
